NAI Fellow Dr. Surya Mallapragada, Associate Vice President for Research and Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at NAI Member Institution Iowa State University, is a leader in biomaterial innovation. A true trailblazer, Dr. Mallapragada’s groundbreaking research focuses on developing advanced materials for delivering genetic material, vaccine delivery, and combatting combating neurodegeneration — areas where her pioneering work has led to impactful advancements. By combining materials science with biotechnology, her research is paving the way for more effective treatments for cancer, nerve damage, and other medical challenges. Q: What inspired you, and continues to inspire you, to be an inventor?
A: The impact that one can have on society, to make a positive change through innovations, is what inspires me.
Q: What do you feel the value of STEM education is, especially to young innovators?
A: I have benefited enormously from my Engineering education, which has taught me problem-solving and life-long learning skills. I am passionate about communicating the value and impact of a STEM education to the next generation.
Q: How do you feel universities or programs can continue to promote innovative and diverse solutions?
A: I think that Universities are the crucibles of innovation, both for ideas and for the future entrepreneurial talent and workforce. It is important to recognize innovation and entrepreneurship in the promotion and tenure processes and the reward systems at Universities.
