Hispanic Heritage Month: An Interview with Gerardo Gamez

NAI Member Institution Champion Gerardo Gamez is a visionary innovator in chemical imaging, optical spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. An active Member of the NAI Chapter of NAI Member Institution Texas Tech University, he leads a dynamic research group pinoerring novel techniques to overcome challenges encountered in the analysis of materials and biological systems. He and his team are advancing techniques like glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy for rapid chemical imaging, as well as studying the mechanisms and matrix effects in ambient ionization while developing new applications. Read below as he discusses advice he’d give to young innovators, his inspiration as an inventor, and more!

Q: What inspired you, and continues to inspire you, to be an inventor?

A: I fell in love with research ever since I got the chance to do it as a first-year student in college. However, I always got more excited about the chemical analysis techniques and instrumentation. I have loads of fun in the lab and relish solving real world challenges with innovations while “looking under the hood” to make sense of the underlying mechanisms.

Q: In your spare time, in addition to working in your field, what do you love to do?

A: I love spending time with my family. I also genuinely enjoy playing drums and recently really got into woodworking.

Q: What advice would you give your younger self, or young innovators, pursuing a career in research and/or innovation?

A: Do not be afraid to go into an area of science outside your expertise. Often, breakthroughs happen when one combines experience in one field with a fresh view into another field. Be open to the unexpected result because it may lead to the most innovative solution. Try to surround yourself with the best people and be especially grateful to those with whom you get a chance to work.
