As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we are excited to spotlight innovators across the ecosystem. Read below as NAI Fellow Dr. Karen Lozano, Julia Beecherl Endowed Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, shares with us why she’s passionate about being an innovator, the value of STEM education, and more! An inventor with expertise in polymer composites and nanofiber systems, Dr. Lozano and her team introduced Forcespinning®, an alternative method for producing nanofibers from a variety of materials.
Q: What words would you use to describe yourself?
A: Innovator, Enabler, Trailblazer, Mentor, Visionary, Leader, Hard worker
Q: What inspired you, and continues to inspire you, to be an inventor?
A: Needs, have had so many that knowing I can solve some fuels my drive to keep going. Needs have brought a sense of purpose—turning challenges into opportunities for innovation—has been a powerful motivator.
Q: Why are you passionate about being an innovator?
A: The opportunity to inspire and empower the next generation to think critically, to take risks that lead to breakthroughs.
Q: In your spare time, in addition to working in your field, what do you love to do?
A: Swimming and spending time with my pets
Q: What do you feel the value of STEM education is, especially to young innovators?
A: STEM education equips young innovators with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills to tackle future challenges and create meaningful solutions. It fosters creativity, resilience, and promotes networking and collaboration. It empowers young innovators with the opportunity to shape the world and lead positive impacts in our society.
